Winter 2020 Speaker & Discover Series

Please note that the March 24 ‘What Bears Teach Up’ presentation in Winter 2020 Kananaskis Speaker & Disovery Series has been cancelled due to concern over COVID-19 spread.

We are pleased to announce the Winter 2020 Kananaskis SPEAKER & DISCOVERY SERIES lineup. In partnership with Alberta Parks and in collaboration with the University of Calgary’s Palliser Club, the series offers a variety of presentation topics and discovery events at the University of Calgary or at the Peter Lougheed Provincial Park Discovery Centre.

HA LING TRAIL REFURBISHMENT – Tuesday February 11 
With Matt Hadley, Trails Technologist at McElhanney Ltd. & Lindsay Collins, Project Manager at Alberta Environment & Parks

Learn all about the planning, design and building of the refurbished Ha Ling Trail. The presentation will highlight the planning and design process and how innovative design and construction techniques were employed to create an engaging, artistic and robust trail to fit into the mountain environment. Photo: www.kananaskistrails.com     

FROM KANANASKIS COUNTRY TO THE OLYMPICS: A NORDIC ATHLETE’S JOURNEY  – Wednesday February 26
With Heidi Widmer, 2014 Canadian Olympic Cross Country Ski Team Athlete & Winsport Manager Mike Norton

Join Canadian Olympic Cross Country Ski athlete Heidi Widmer and Winsport Manager Mike Norton for an inside look at an athlete’s road to the Olympics with one of Canada’s elite cross country skiers, and learn more about the history of the Canmore Nordic Centre and Kananaskis Country’s Haig Glacier camp and their significance to nordic athletes.

CANCELLED – WHAT BEARS TEACH US – Tuesday March 24
With Sarah Elmeligi, independent bear biologist & featuring photography by John Marriott

Canmore-based bear biologist Sarah Elmeligi will be sharing a preview of the upcoming book What Bears Teach Us. Learn all about Sarah’s experiences researching Ursus throughout Western Canada, captured through the lens of renowned wildlife photographer John Marriott.

All events start at 1:00pm, meet in Discovery Centre

THE SCIENCE OF SNOW –  Saturday January 25th

with Briana Van Den Bussche

Join Briana VanDen Bussche from the University of Calgary Barrier Field Station, while we explore Winter Ecology and THE SCIENCE OF SNOW! Discover how animals adapt to the cold, try out the equipment firsthand and borrow snowshoes and explore. Dress warmly and prepare to be outside.
