Keeping Kananaskis Clean and Great

May 16, 2019 By //  by Nancy Ouimet

A big thank you for joining our annual Highway 40 Cleanup and helping keep Kananaskis clean and great. Although the day started off breezy, we couldn’t have asked for a better day!

We were a total of 73 volunteers, and cleaned our assigned 50km by 1:30pm. Overall, there was less litter than previous years, either a result of our good work…or people being more responsible.

Thanks for separating the refundable cans and bottles. I returned the following to the bottle depot and received a bonus $85.10 refund.

2019 Refundables

536 Aluminum Cans

1 Cartons 0-1 Litre

19 Domestic Beers

46 Glass 0-1 Litre

212 Plastic 0-1 Litre

5 Plastic Over 1L

= $85.10

2018 Refundables

1,004 Aluminum Cans

10 Cartons 0-1 Litre

36 Domestic Beers

72 Glass 0-1 Litre

218 Plastic 0-1 Litre

5 Plastic Over 1L

= $136.45

Interesting things found this year include: an umbrella, 2 skull necklaces, $10 in a shirt pocket, 2 spare tires, and several hubcaps to name a few.

Here’s some feedback from a few volunteers:

“Congrats on another great Hwy 40 Clean-up! We had lots of fun. By the way, on the second leg of the clean-up (we stop at Km 44) we heard and saw 3 avalanches. Today I saw this note about people who got in trouble on Saturday. We all need to be very careful during this time of the year. Maybe you can post about it? https://www.rmoutlook.com/article/k-country-avalanche-sends-3-to-hospital-20190512”

“The best part was being serenaded by the rumble of numerous avalanches on the mountain at about km 25. What looks like a waterfall in this first photo is wet snow pouring down the chute for about 2 minutes. Fascinating to watch.  Finally got the pylon at Km 49 so we took a break. We were spoiled with this awesome day.”

“Another great day in the trenches”

Thanks again for your help in keeping Kananaskis clean and great!
