KANANASKIS PUBLIC LAND USE ZONE TRAIL CARE
The Kananaskis Public Land Trail Planning and Maintenance initiative is a new 2019 program for FKC that will provide our volunteers with opportunities to improve and maintain over 100km of trails in the North West Kananaskis section of the Public Land Use Zone (PLUZ) that have lacked attention and regular maintenance over the years.
Our first step in this project involved assessing maintenance needs, and we are now ready to start work on trail maintenance on the Prairie Creek Trail in the southern section of the PLUZ.
Project Dates: August 7, 9, 15, 20, 21
Meeting time: 9:30am (work day: 9:30am-3:30pm)
Meeting location: Powderface Day Use – go through Bragg Creek to Kananaskis Country. Turn right (West) on Hwy 66 to Powderface Day Use, just past Elbow Falls.
What to expect: The level of effort will range from moderate to difficult and mainly include hand tool work for trail maintenance tasks including removing duff and earth with hoes and pulaskis, moving rock, limbing of branches, creating short sections of new trail, and shoveling/raking out rutting.
What to bring: Come prepared to work all day in an outdoor environment. Dress in layers, bring a backpack and rain gear, hat, sunglasses & sunscreen, supportive footwear (i.e. sturdy hiking boots), work gloves, along with your lunch, snacks, water for the day, bear spray, and any other personal items you may want/need (i.e. medications). All of the tools and equipment will be supplied.
Volunteer Agreement Form: Volunteers will need to fill out this Volunteer Agreement Form. The form can be filled out once, and valid for the entire season by filling out the ‘Termination of Agreement’ section at the bottom of the form and adding date ‘December 31, 2019’. To accelerate the paperwork process, you can print and fill out this form prior to the trail care day and give to the Crew Leader. We`ll also have some on site.
Note: Should weather not cooperate and we need to cancel, we will notify you by email around 12pm the day before the event.
How to cancel a sign up: Should you have to cancel, here are the steps:
You can do the above steps up to 48 hours prior to the event. Less than 48 hours in advance, please email Tim Johnson FKC Coordinator tim@kananaskis.org & Nancy Ouimet, Executive Director at nancy@kananaskis.org
Sign up closes at 12pm the day prior to the event.
