Highway 40 Cleanup

May 11, 2019 @ 9:00 am - 2:00 pm

Let’s Cleanup Highway 40 – Saturday, May 11

Sunny days ahead will help melt the new snow in Kananaskis.

Join us for our annual Highway 40 Cleanup on May 11, from Highway 40 South (Stoney Nakoda Casino) to the Peter Lougheed – Kananaskis Lakes Trail turn-off (50km). The clean up is sponsored by Alberta Transportation. This event is great for families who can walk 2-4km comfortably , we leave it to your discretion whether your child is old enough to join. No pets allowed.

Last year we had 105 volunteers clean 50km within a few hour and help keep Kananaskis clean and great. We separated refundable cans and bottles, which made up about half of the garbage we collected. This represented: 1,004 Aluminum Cans, 10 Cartons 0-1 Litre, 36 Domestic Beers, 72 Glass 0-1 Litre, 218 Plastic 0-1 Litre,  and 5 Plastic Over 1L!!!

Date: Saturday, May 11

Meeting time: 9:00am (9:00am – 2:00pm)

Meeting location: Stoney Nakoda Casino Parking

Trans Canada Hwy (Hwy 1) to the junction with Kananaskis Hwy 40. Turn south on Hwy 40, the entrance to the casino parking lot is approximately 100 meters from the junction.

What to expect: Volunteers will work in pairs picking up debris the size of a chocolate bar wrapper or larger and filling garbage bags. You will clean approximately 2-4 kilometres of road edge, or more, depending how fast your group moves.

What to bring: Participants must wear a safety vest and gloves. The vests and garbage bags will be provided, along with gloves if needed (only offered in adult size). As a reminder, wear sturdy footwear and select clothes you do not mind getting dirty, long pants are strongly recommended and bring rain gear. Pack your lunch, water, sunscreen, bug spray, bear spray, and other personal gear.

Volunteer Waiver Form: If you can, print and fill out this Volunteer Waiver. If you prefer to use a bucket for collecting debris and then dump it into the garbage bags, bring a bucket. We have 40 litter pick-up tools that will be available, not enough for everyone so older folks get priority.

Guidelines and Rules: Please review this Guidelines and Rules Handout, which summarizes the key points outlined in this video. We will also be review this together on Saturday.

Sign up will close once we get to 100 people signed up or 24 hours before the event.

Carpooling: Some of you might be interested in carpooling. We are going to try the ‘Group Carpool’ option and see how it goes (feedback welcome!). If you what to drive a carpool, you add your car and number of spot available. When entering your information, I suggest you include the meeting location and your expected gas cost in the bottom ‘Notes’ section. Once someone has added their car, you can sign up to join them as a passenger.
