Canmore South Habitat Patch

September 18, 2016 @ 9:00 am - 4:00 pm

South Canmore trail sign FINALThe South Canmore Habitat Patch was delineated in the Wildlife Corridor and Habitat Patch Guidelines for the Bow Valley: Updated 2012. This report recommended that a review of non-designated recreational trails be conducted in the South Canmore Habitat Patch to determine which trails should be closed and how the network of non-designated trails can be replaced by a designated trail system that accommodates the purpose of the habitat patch

In an effort to improve the ecological integrity of the South Canmore Habitat Patch, the Town of Canmore has initiated trail improvements in this area including:

  • Removal of hazard trees
  • Installation of trail signage to indicate the recommended route through the area
  • Decommissioning of redundant trails to reduce trail density

In partnership with the Town of Canmore, the Friends will help reclaim some of the less used trails in this habitat patch on Sunday, Sept 18.

Meeting time: 9:00am   (9:00am-4:00pm)

Meeting location: Canmore – Millennium Park

Number of people needed: 20

What to expect: The level of effort will range from low to medium and mainly include blocking shortcuts and less used trails, breaking up the compacted soil in the old trail tread to allow the seeds and roots of new plants to penetrate, and planting native species (transplant shrubs and small trees).

What to bring: You’ll need to wear hiking boots and bring work gloves (Friends of Kananaskis work gloves will be available), rain gear (hopefully not needed), along with your lunch, water, sunscreen, bug spray, bear spray, and other personal gear. All of the tools and equipment will be supplied.

SIGN UP HERE (sign up closes at 12pm the day prior to the event)

Volunteer Agreement Form: All volunteers will have to fill out this Volunteer Agreement Form.

The form can be filled out once, and valid for the entire season by filling out the ‘Termination of Agreement’ section at the bottom of the form and adding date ‘December 31, 2016’.

To accelerate the paperwork process, print and fill out this form prior to the trail care day. Please present your completed form to the Friends of KC Crew Leader.

Note: Should weather not cooperate and we need to cancel, we will notify you by email around 12pm the day before the event.
